Mr. Calvin L. Berry III, Founder/Director

Mr. Berry has played percussion instruments and been involved in music since the age of 3. He is a native of Destrehan, Louisiana and Graduated from Destrehan High School in 1996, where he was selected as Percussion Captain. At an early age he arranged, scored music and taught cadences to other students as a Junior and Senior in High School. He attended Southern University in Baton Rouge in 1996 and quickly moved on to Jackson State University in Mississippi and participated in both band programs.

After college, while working full time he managed to volunteer his time to many local schools and organizations to assist with their band programs. In August of 2003, Mr. Berry started “The Master’s Touch” DrumLine by teaching elementary age students with no prior experience to start in an after school DrumLine. In 2005, He started the All-Star DrumLine which is independent of the school programs for students age 12 through high school to give the advanced students a chance to learn at a greater level and to perform for private and public events. Months later he started the MiNi-Me DrumLine, also independent of the schools for students’ ages 4 to 12. This season birthed his own Music Academy offering private lessons, piano and guitar.

Mr. Berry is the Director of the New Orleans Pelicans DrumLine and the New Orleans Pelicans Mini-DrumLine which began in 2007 when the Pel’s (previously the N.O. Hornets) returned home to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. All-Star and MiNi-Me DrumLine students who are able to commit to the full season undergo an audition process to be selected into these Professional Level DrumLines and play for home games and special appearances.

Mr. Berry has most recently earned the title of percussion instructor for the Sonic Boom of the South at Jackson State University since the Fall of 2019. He has been blessed by giving back to War & Thunder through instruction and mentorship which is near and dear to his heart as he is Alumni of WT.

Mr. Berry's vision is quickly expanding in 2023 as “The Master's Touch” has been established and reaching the community of Jackson, Mississippi and surrounding areas! TMT Jackson Sector will be a duplicate program of the New Orleans location and while both sectors can stand alone in their respective geographical areas they will also be able to combine for merged performances both big and small. This is just the beginning to the expansion that is sure to be felt in the percussion world for years to come. Jackson, Mississippi is also the birthplace of our TMT Legendary DrumLine which features percussionists over 18 years of age with no age limit. A 3rd location launched February 2024 in Covington, LA called our TMT Northshore Sector and serves students 10 years+. Additionally, as times evolve and change, both virtual and hybrid programs are available for instruction via membership.

One of the highlights of his percussion career is the ability to travel, contributing and supporting other percussion programs around the world. He has been a clinician in Japan, Italy, Nicaragua and multiple states here in the US. Mr. Berry enjoys invitations from around the USA to sit on a panel of judges for many schools and programs. He has been called “The Drum Dr.” on many occasions by so many because of his extraordinary ability to rehab any program or individual who seeks his help! Most of all Mr. Berry goes above and beyond just drum instruction; he is a role model, mentor, and counselor, father figure to students, tutor and disciplinarian. He believes in empowering the next generation through the gift of Percussion. This passion for percussion has led to countless individuals achieving scholarships, degrees and opportunities.
